Multi-Mode Passive Detection System
Multi-Mode Passive Detection System
The Discovery (Multi-Mode Passive Detection System) is a next-generation cargo inspection solution that delivers rapid, non-intrusive scanning of shipping containers. Using advanced cosmic ray tomography, Discovery creates 3D images without emitting radiation, ensuring safe operation for personnel, drivers, K9 units, and the surrounding environment. Compact, efficient, and superior in detection performance, Discovery is designed to strengthen border security while accelerating trade flow.
Rapid, Non-Intrusive Scanning
Discovery outperforms existing technologies, offering accurate scans in as little as 30 seconds. Drivers and passengers can remain inside their vehicles during inspection, significantly reducing delays while increasing throughput at busy ports and border crossings.
Zero Radiation Exposure
Unlike X-ray or gamma-based systems, Discovery uses naturally occurring cosmic rays, eliminating any radiation risk. Operators, officers, drivers, and working animals remain completely safe throughout scanning operations, with no exclusion zones required.
Penetration Capability
Cosmic ray tomography enables Discovery to scan through dense and complex materials including steel, lead, concrete, ice, water, and other water-dense shielding materials. This ensures reliable detection of hidden threats and contraband within diverse cargo types.
Compact and Cost-Efficient
With no need for radiation shielding or exclusion zones, Discovery conserves valuable dock and border space. The system is fully remote-operable by a single officer, reducing manpower requirements and operational costs.
Performance Features
Discovery automatically alerts operators if gamma radiation is detected and identifies shielding or high-Z materials such as special nuclear materials. A proprietary material signature library enhances detection of specific threats, while void detection technology flags potential concealment zones within containers.
How Discovery Works
Discovery leverages naturally occurring cosmic ray tomography. As muons and electrons from cosmic rays penetrate container materials, their trajectories change depending on the density and atomic number of the cargo. The system’s drift-tube arrays detect these changes, generating highly accurate 3D images that expose anomalies invisible to conventional technologies.
