Bomb Suppression Blanket & Distance Ring System

Bomb Blanket and Ring BSD/BSR

The Bomb Blanket and Ring BSD/BSR system provides rapid, portable protection when a suspicious package or IED is discovered. By combining a flexible blast and fragmentation blanket with a dedicated distance ring, it allows EOD technicians and tactical teams to quickly create a protective barrier around the device, helping to reduce the effects of fragments, blast pressure, flame and heat.

Key benefits

  • Fast, uncomplicated protection: Enables quick establishment of a protective zone around a suspicious object, without complex tools or extensive set‑up.
  • Blast and fragment mitigation: The blanket helps to contain and deflect fragments, blast effects, flame and heat away from nearby people and assets by covering the device.
  • Enhanced performance with ring: Optimal protection is achieved when the blanket is used together with the distance ring (BSR), which helps direct the force of the blast upwards into the blanket.
  • Supports tactical withdrawal: Bomb blankets can also be used by tactical operators to shield themselves and exposed bystanders while withdrawing from a hazardous area or creating a covered route.
  • Lightweight and portable: Constructed from multi‑layer aramid ballistic fabric in a water‑repellent, flame‑retardant outer cover, the blanket and ring are light enough to be carried and deployed by a small team.
  • Flexible configurations: Different levels of fragmentation protection, as well as various sizes and configurations, are available to suit different threat environments and user requirements.

Typical applications

  • First‑response protection around suspect bags, parcels or small devices in public spaces while awaiting specialist EOD support.
  • Improvised explosive device (IED) and letter/parcel bomb incidents in buildings, vehicles or open areas.
  • Temporary shielding of vulnerable infrastructure, equipment or access points from blast and fragmentation threats.
  • Additional mitigation during render‑safe procedures (RSPs) or remote actions by EOD teams.
  • Training scenarios where safe, repeatable deployment of a bomb blanket and ring is required to rehearse SOPs.

How the bomb blanket & ring system works

In a typical deployment, the distance ring is placed on its edge around the suspicious item to form a low circular barrier. The bomb blanket is then laid over the ring and device, with lifting straps or handles used to position it safely from stand‑off. If the device detonates, the ring helps channel the explosive force vertically into the blanket, while the blanket’s ballistic layers are designed to trap or deflect fragments and reduce the hazard to nearby personnel and property.

Technical highlights

  • Product: Bomb Blanket and Ring BSD/BSR (bomb suppression blanket and safety circle).
  • Ballistic performance: Blanket and ring tested to a V50 of at least 500 m/s with a 17 grain fragment simulating projectile (.22 calibre FSP) in accordance with STANAG 2920
  • Materials: Multiple layers of high‑strength aramid ballistic fabric with a high‑tenacity PA66 (approx. 1000 denier) outer cover, treated for water repellency and flame resistance.
  • Bomb blanket size (typical): approx. 1,550 mm × 1,550 mm (W × L).
  • Bomb blanket weight (typical): approx. 11 kg (±0.5 kg).
  • Distance ring size (typical): approx. 1,550 mm × 450 mm (L × H), forming a low circular wall around the device.
  • Distance ring weight (typical): approx. 4 kg (±0.5 kg).
  • Design features: Blanket and ring fold for storage in a carrying bag with straps around the outside, simplifying transport, rapid deployment and safe placement over a suspect device.
  • Configurations: Available in different protection levels, sizes and configurations to meet varied operational needs.
