High-Temperature Thermite Charge

Thermit Destructor (TD-A)

The Thermit Destructor (TD-A), supplied by J3Seven, is a high-temperature thermite charge designed to rapidly burn through thin sheet metal and fuze pockets and ignite the high explosive (HE) filling or other energetic materials inside. By using focused thermal action rather than a donor charge, TD-A allows EOD teams to burn out munitions with significantly reduced risk of high-order detonation.

TD-A is intended for professional Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and demilitarisation use only. It gives operators a “no cut” option for many thin-cased items and is also the thermite core used in the Hot Drop system for extended stand-off and increased penetration.

Why EOD Teams Use TD-A

Rapid penetration of thin casings: TD-A is formulated to concentrate heat and molten metal onto a small area, burning quickly through thin steel and fuze pockets so heat can reach the HE filling or other energetic contents.

Low-order, burn-based neutralisation: Instead of driving a high-order detonation, TD-A is designed to ignite the filling and promote rapid combustion/deflagration, helping to minimise fragmentation, blast overpressure and noise when used within its design envelope.

“No cut” option for many munitions: By burning through thin metal and fuze pockets, TD-A often removes the need to mechanically or hydro-abrasively cut the casing to expose the fill, which is useful where items are classed as “no touch” or where cutting introduces additional risk.

Pre-mixed and bagged for ease of use: TD-A is supplied as a premixed thermite composition in plastic bags, making it straightforward to position and shape to the target surface in line with local SOPs, without mixing powders on site.

Integrated into the Hot Drop system: For threats that require more stand-off or increased penetration (for example thicker-walled mortars and shells), TD-A is used within the Hot Drop kit, extending its capability while maintaining a thermite-based, low-order approach.

Typical Applications

TD-A is intended for use by trained EOD and demilitarisation personnel as part of controlled neutralisation or disposal processes. Typical application scenarios include:

  • Burning out thin-cased HE munitions where mechanical cutting is undesirable or not authorised.
  • Igniting fillings via fuze pockets and similar access points instead of opening the main body of the casing.
  • Supporting low-order disposal of legacy or sensitive ordnance within approved EOD SOPs.
  • Providing the thermite component for the Hot Drop stand-off burn system for “no touch” items.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of munitions is TD-A designed for?

TD-A is designed for munitions and components with thin steel casings and accessible fuze pockets, where focused thermite burn-through can ignite the filling. It is not intended as a universal solution for thick or hardened cases, which may require other tools such as Hot Drop, TSID or conventional disposal techniques.

Does TD-A completely remove the risk of detonation?

No system can remove risk entirely. TD-A is designed to reduce the likelihood of high-order detonation by using a burn-based approach, but EOD teams must still follow formal risk assessments, safety distances and SOPs for each task.

Who is authorised to use TD-A?

TD-A is for professional use only and should only be employed by trained EOD and demilitarisation personnel under approved national and organisational procedures. It is not a consumer or general-purpose product.

How does TD-A relate to the Hot Drop system?

TD-A is the thermite mix used within the Hot Drop stand-off kit. While TD-A on its own is placed directly on the target, Hot Drop uses TD-A in a crucible and stand arrangement to increase penetration and provide additional stand-off for “no touch” items.

Can TD-A be used with other initiators?

Only the Thermite Initiated Starter (TIS) is recommended for initiating TD-A. Alternative initiation methods should not be used unless specifically evaluated and approved by the responsible technical authority and manufacturer.
