Thermal Shock Deflagration Blocks

Thermal Shock Induced Deflagration System (TSID)

The Thermal Shock Induced Deflagration System (TSID), supplied by J3Seven, is a specialised thermite-based tool designed to neutralise high explosive (HE) filled munitions using a low-order technique rather than high-order demolition. TSID blocks are placed in intimate contact with the casing of the target weapon and, when initiated, deliver a powerful thermal shock that causes the explosive filling to deflagrate rapidly instead of detonating.

By promoting rapid combustion of the munition’s fill and bursting the casing from internal gas overpressure, TSID significantly reduces fragmentation, blast over-pressure and acoustic pollution. It is intended for trained Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and demilitarisation teams working on large HE projectiles, aircraft bombs and similar cylindrical HE munitions where low-order neutralisation is preferred.

Why EOD Teams Use TSID

Low-order neutralisation of large HE munitions: TSID is purpose-built to neutralise large HE cylindrical munitions – such as artillery projectiles and general-purpose aircraft bombs – via deflagration rather than detonation, reducing the risk of high-order outcomes.

Reduced fragmentation and blast: By driving a controlled burn of the filling, TSID minimises fragmentation hazard, blast over-pressure and acoustic impact compared with standard high-order explosive disposal techniques.

Compatible with a wide range of HE fillings: TSID blocks have been demonstrated against many common military HE compositions, providing a flexible tool for mixed legacy stockpiles and battlefield clearance.

Shaped to common ammunition profiles: Standard TSID sizes are curved to match the outer radius of typical shells and bombs, ensuring good contact; blocks can be further contoured by the user and custom variants can be manufactured for specific targets.

Electrically initiated with TIS: TSID blocks are initiated by inserting a Thermite Initiated Starter (TIS) into the block, giving a simple, pre-assembled electric starting method that is common across the
thermal product suite.

Favourable transport classification: Both TSID blocks and TIS starters are classified as UN 4.1 flammable solids, not explosives. This can simplify transport, storage and security procedures compared with traditional explosive donor charges, while still requiring professional controls.

Applications

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD)

TSID provides EOD operators with a low-order neutralisation technique for large HE-filled munitions where collateral damage, fragmentation and environmental constraints make high-order demolition undesirable. It is particularly valuable when working near infrastructure, sensitive installations or populated areas where blast and debris must be tightly managed.

Demilitarisation

Disposing of HE-filled munitions stockpiles is an ongoing international challenge, and open detonation is increasingly restricted by environmental regulations and community expectations. TSID offers a practical alternative to conventional countermines by enabling controlled deflagration of the filling while limiting blast and fragmentation effects, supporting responsible demilitarisation programmes.

Give your EOD and demilitarisation teams a proven, thermite-based option for low-order neutralisation of large HE munitions.
