CBRN Patient Isolation Litter

ISOVAC C3L™ (Contaminated Casualty Containment Litter)

Isolate and transport contaminated casualties while reducing cross-contamination risk. The ISOVAC C3L™ is a portable Patient Isolation Unit (PIU) designed to prevent CBRN particulate cross-contamination—including exposure scenarios involving a broad range of toxic industrial chemicals (TICs), chemical warfare agents (CWAs) and biological hazards—between the patient and the external environment.

During operation, the C3L™ maintains a negative differential pressure environment to contain and isolate an infected or contaminated patient. Directional airflow is introduced at the head end and exhausted at the foot end via a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR), with CBRN filtration at both points using standard NATO 40 mm thread connectors.

Why teams choose the C3L™

  • Negative-pressure containment: internal environment operates under negative differential pressure to contain and isolate the patient.
  • High protection factor: protection factor of 26,000:1 during operation with active airflow and CBRN filtration.
  • Rapid setup: assembly can be completed in less than 1 minute by a single operator, including in extreme heat/cold environments.
  • Directional airflow design: airflow is introduced at the head end and exhausted at the foot end via PAPR.
  • CBRN filtration at intake and exhaust: filtration specified as CBRN with HE/P100 particulate performance (99.99% @ 0.3 µm).
  • NATO-standard interfaces: all filter locations on the unit and PAPR utilise the NATO 40 mm thread connector.
  • Full-body clinical access: glove ports throughout the unit plus medical tube ports and integrated pass-through ports.
  • Enhanced visibility: flexible envelope optimises patient visibility, offering unrestricted view of 100% of the patient from top and side vantage points.
  • Reduced patient heat-stress: breathable envelope fabric designed to reduce patient heat stress while protecting against multiple threat forms (liquid, aerosol, vapour).
  • Standards-based material claims: envelope fabric is component material certified to NFPA 1994-2012 (Class 3), shown to meet/exceed US Military TPV requirements (TOP 8-2-501), and meets ASTM F1671M-13 for blood borne pathogen penetration resistance.

Where the C3L™ fits

  • Field casualty movement: rapid patient/casualty isolation transport in the field.
  • Medevac and patient transport platforms: isolated transport on aircraft, ambulances, ships, or any vehicle capable of safely transporting a patient on a standard litter.
  • Facility workflows: temporary isolation of patients within hospitals or other medical facilities.

Access, ports and patient retention

  • Glove access: 12 glove arms total (6 per side) to support access to the patient during transport.
  • Medical tube ports: various sized ports for a range of medical tubing.
  • Pass-through ports: 6 pass-through ports to insert items into the unit during use.
  • Patient restraint: 2 pairs of leg straps, 1 waist strap and 1 chest strap.
  • Spine board compatibility: optional use (loaded in with patient).

Deployment and transport configuration

  • Collapsible and portable: fully collapsible and transportable by two operators.
  • Carry straps: 8 integral carry straps (4 per side).
  • Litter attachment: secured using external strapping on the bottom of the unit (compatible with multiple platforms such as gurney/stretcher).
  • Support structure: three rib support structures across the unit and three spine support structures from head to foot ends.

Frequently asked questions

What is the C3L™ designed to do?

The C3L™ is designed as a portable Patient Isolation Unit (PIU) to prevent CBRN particulate cross-contamination (including TICs, CWAs and biological hazards) between the patient and the external environment during isolation and transport.

Is the C3L™ negative pressure?

Yes. During operation, the internal environment experiences a negative differential pressure to contain and isolate the patient.

How fast can it be deployed?

Assembly can be completed in less than 1 minute by a single operator.

How do clinicians access the patient during transport?

The C3L™ provides glove ports throughout the unit (12 glove arms total), plus medical tube ports and integrated pass-through ports for supplies.

What transport platforms does it support?

It is intended for rapid field transport and for isolated transport on vehicles capable of safely transporting a patient on a standard litter (including aircraft, ambulances and ships). It also supports temporary isolation in medical facilities.

How long does it operate?

The stated operational duration is 7–10 hours (nominal) with a fresh BA-5800 battery and can be extended via battery swap; NiMH rechargeable batteries are listed at 2–4 hours nominal.
